தெரிந்த மாமல்லபுரம், தெரியாத இடங்கள்

மாமல்லபுரத்தின் வடக்கே கங்கைகொண்டான் மண்டபத்திலிருந்து சென்னைக்கு செல்லும் நெடுஞ்சாலைக்கு சிறுதொலைவிற்கு முன்பே, வலதுபுறமாக மக்கள் நடமாட்டமின்றி கிழக்கு நோக்கிய ஒரு கோயிலை காணலாம். மாமல்லபுரத்தில் காணப்படும் கோயில்களில், இக்கோயில் சற்று வித்யாசமானதாய் காணப்படும்.

“முகுந்த நாயனார் கோயில்” என்று அழைக்கப்படும் இக்கோயில், கல்வெட்டின் மூலம் “திருமுகலிப்பாமுடையார்” கோயில் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டதாக அறியமுடிகின்றது.

இரண்டு அடுக்கு அமைப்போடு காணப்படும் இக்கோயில் தரைமட்டத்தை விட கீழே உள்ளது. கருவறை, முகமண்டபம் ஆகிய அமைப்போடு பாதபந்த அதிட்டான அமைப்பில் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. நீள்சதுர வடிவிலான இக்கோயில் சிகரம், மேல்பகுதி சிதைந்து, அதன் கழுத்தில் தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி, உமாமகேசுவரர், நான்முகன், யோகநரசிம்மரை காணமுடியும். கோயில் சுவரில் சிற்பங்கள் எதுவும் அலங்கரிக்கவில்லை.

கருவறை சுவரில் சோமாஸ்கந்தரின் புடைப்பு சிற்பமும், அதன் முன்புறம் உருள் வடிவ சிவலிங்கமும் உள்ளது. மாமல்லபுரத்தில் மற்ற கோயில்களை பார்க்க வருபவர்கள் இக்கோயிலையும் பார்க்க சென்றால் இக்கோயிலும் பிரபலமடையும்.

North of Mamallapuram, from Gangaikondan Mandapam to Chennai, just before the highway, we can see a temple on the right, facing east. This temple looks different from the temples found in Mamallapuram.

Scholars mention this temple as a Poor specimen of Pallava architecture belonging to the Rajasimha style. People call this temple “Mukunda Nayanar Temple“, whereas the inscriptions mention “Thirumugalipamudaiyar“. This Dvi-tala (two-tier) temple consists of a Sanctum Sanctorum and a Mukha Mandapa with the Padabandha Adhisthana type. The walls above the adhisthana are built plain without any Devakoshta.

Inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, the rear wall has a Somaskanda panel where Shiva is seated with Parvati and baby Skanda between those two. Vishnu and Brahma are shown on either side of Shiva, and a cylindrical Shiva Linga is in front of the panel.

Though the temple is visible from the road, people will only visit it a little since it is unfamiliar.
