காஞ்சிபுரம் என்று சொன்னாலே பல கோவில்களை கொண்டது என்பதை நாம் மறுக்கமுடியாத உண்மை. ஆனால் காஞ்சிபுரம் மற்றும் அதன் சுற்று வட்டார பகுதிகளில் இன்னும் அறியப்படாத அழகிய மற்றும் புராதமான இடங்கள், கோவில்கள் உள்ளன. அதில் ஒன்று தான் இந்த நடவாவி கிணறு.

நடவாவி கிணறு அல்லது நடவாய் கிணறு என்பது காஞ்சிபுரத்தில் இருந்து சுமார் 7 கிமீ தொலைவில் உள்ள அய்யங்கார்குளம் கிராமத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள படிகிணற்றுடன் கூடிய ஒரு மண்டபம் ஆகும். வருடம் முழுவதும், நீரில் மூழிகி இருக்கும் இம்மண்டபம், சித்ராபௌர்ணமி தினத்தன்று காஞ்சி அத்தி வரதர் வருகைக்காக திறந்து வைக்கப்படும். கிணற்றின் முன் உள்ள கல் வளைவு ஆனது அழகிய வேலைப்பாடுகளுடன் கஜலக்ஷ்மி உருவத்துடன் அழகாக அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தூணின் இருபுறங்களிலும் வீரர்கள் யாளி மீது அமைர்ந்துள்ளது போல் உள்ள காட்சி தத்ரூபமாக உள்ளது.
சரியான பதிவுகளோ, எதற்காக, எப்போது கட்டப்பட்டது என்பதற்கான கல்வெட்டுகளோ இங்கு கிடைக்கவில்லை. விஜயநகரப் பேரரசின் அரசவையில் இருந்த தாத்தாச்சார்யா என்றும் அழைக்கப்படும் தாத தேசிகன் என்பவரால் அருகிலுள்ள சஞ்சீவராயர் கோயில் கட்டப்பட்டது, மேலும் கட்டிடக்கலை விஜயநகர வடிவங்களை ஒத்திருக்கிறது. எனவே இந்த நடவாவி கிணறு அவர் கட்டியிருக்கலாம் என வல்லுநர்கள் நம்புகின்றனர். இந்தியாவின் தொல்லியல் ஆய்வு மூலம் இந்த இடம் பல்லவ ஆட்சி காலத்தில் (கி.பி. 1023) கட்டப்பட்டது என்று மதிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

The Nadavavi Kinaru or Nadavai Kinaru is a StepWell located in Ayyangarkulam village, 7km away from Kanchipuram. This site is active only during Chitra Pournami during the visit of Kanchi Lord Varadharaja Perumal, and he gives darshan to the devotees in the underground 12 pillared mandapam.
The Nadavavi Kinaru has an arch with Ghajalakshmi, similar to Hampi Thulabharam. The intricately carved Arch entrance with a Gaja Lakshmi on its perch is the doorway to the stepwell. The two ends have the warriors riding the Vyalas.
It contains a square-shaped well in the middle with cloistered verandahs. This site is usually full of water, and there is a mechanism called Yetram Iraithal, which has been followed during ancient times. And they installed a vast rock pillar-like structure to run this mechanism. The principal purpose of this structure was to irrigate the agricultural field. A staircase of 48 stairs leads, and in that 27 leads you to underground mandapam. And it is believed that there is another Mandapam below where the balance steps will take you to where we don’t have access. This has been thought that this secret door connects the blackhole.
We don’t have proper records or an inscription on why and when the structure has been built. The nearby Sanjeevarayar temple was constructed by Thatha Desikan, also called Lakshmi Kumara Thathacharya, who was in the Vijayanagar empire’s royalty, and the architecture resembles Vijayanagara patterns. Hence people believe he probably built this Nadavavi Kinaru. This has been judged that the site was constructed during the Pallava dynasty (1023 AD) by India’s Archeology survey.
